Possibilities Playground

Darien Community Park Possibilities Playground
An Inclusive & Sensory Playground for all kids!

In 2018, the Darien Park District opened the Possibilities Playground at the Southwest corner of Darien Community Park.

This playground was designed as a fully inclusive, ADA accessible, sensory playground for kids of all abilities. An inclusive playground is a playground that offers handicap accessibility, and integrates playground equipment that all children can enjoy together. A sensory playground is a playground that contains playground elements that stimulate one of the seven senses. The goal of these playgrounds is to ensure a playground design that gives all children the opportunity to play together side by side.

Some specific features of the Possibilities Playground are:

  • Rubber surfacing that is easy to use with crutches, wheelchairs and strollers
  • Wide pathways between playground components for easy mobility
  • Special needs play equipment is integrated with other playground equipment, which allows all children to play together
  • Specific sensory equipment, including music equipment and sand area
  • Play area is fully enclosed by a fence
  • Includes a large, main play area, and five imaginative play areas
  • Picnic tables and a shade structure are available inside the playground area
